Hello!

I am having a bit of a problem scanning for offsets.

When I use the "Pointer scan for this address" function on Cheat Engine, it will return a lot of addresses, but after I re-scan for pointers, it returns nothing.

When I use the "Find out what accesses this address" function, this is what I get:

To me it looks like it is returning 0's for the offset, which should not be possible. Lol.

Does anyone have experience with this problem that can help?

Maybe your pointerscanner settings are wrong and it just finds some crap.

Use these tuts:

It's totally possible to have an offset of 0, that just means you dereference immediately after.

*(0x100 + 0) same as *0x100 ( obv with actual pointer types )

I scan using default settings.

I have not changed anything. Lol.

I'd like to reiterate that having no offset IS POSSIBLE.

I guess it's possible, but still doesn't explain why I can't find a static pointer/offset to it.

I keep ended up with nothing. Lol.

Pointer scanning is far from reliable, it may work once in a blue moon, but normally unless you invest some time ( and in a few cases, more time than it'd take to do it manually ) , it will be completely wrong.

You've probably got multiple branches that your pointer chain can take, get ready to check em all.

What tools or methods should I be using to make sure I do it accurately? Or in this case manually?

Does that make sense?

The exact same tool you've been using. Cheat engine, there are tutorials out there if you don't know how to do that, cheat engine's own tutorial may even teach you how to do that, i cant remember

or find it in olly, pray the call stack isn't xxxxed, and trace back until you find something noice.

it even tells you the value of the pointer needed to find the address is XXXXXXX

the command is mov [ebp+0], val

so you want to look for the register EBP, look at it's value, that's what you should search for

I finally found it!

I pointer scan settings was:

Nr of threads scanning: 5
Maximum Offset value: 8048
Max Level: 5

I am glad I did not give up the search! LOL.

Got some really weird offsets (ones that I am not used to seeing) though.

It hurts me when people don't do it manually :( Normally you find smaller chains than what pointer scans give you anyway.

But congrats

I really have not looked into pointer scanning (or searching) manually.

Is there any reference links you can provide? It could benefit me in the future.

I don't have anything, you can probably google it and possibly stumble on a fleep video, just learn the concept and try to apply it to other ( simpler at first ) games. It may also be in the cheat engine tutorial.

I know I should not grave dig, but I had to come back and thank you Mambda!

I eventually learned how to look for pointer(s) and offset(s) manually, and I must say it is way better than Cheat Engine's Pointer Scanner.

It's much faster and more accurate!

Thank you for the inspiration! :D

xD Thanks to your inspiration it only takes me less than 5 minutes to find pointers/offset. Versus scanning and re-scanning for pointers, which took approximately 15 minutes at most. Lol.

Even then the pointer/offsets would be unstable, because the pointer could not have been accurate.
