Gonna keep it short and simple. I see tutorials all over youtube about "how to hack games" but not often do i see one that demonstrates how cracking (in its entirety) works. What all goes into it? i have cracked a few programs myself in practice using debuggers. But how much work goes into some of this stuff? For example, GTA5 cracked. How do they recreate the original game.exe that will let you run a copied version of the game? Also how do they re pack this stuff to make it redistributable for the public? What is the motive behind it? And what are the risks?

Just a subject for discussion.

Was browsing this website, and it just blew my mind that there have been so many cracks/keygens over the years. (my inspiration for this thread)

its interesting that its a whole business...the top groups have people who help them at the right positions..

- delivery people
-storekeeper
-warehouseman

these are the people who make it possible for them to present cracks often even BEFORE day 1. ofc some are even paid.

i think its a passion. these people love to sniff around in code and most see this as a challenge. to be faster then anyone else - i dont think its about the cracking itself or actualy playing or using the software. thast why most groups even say: "IF YOU LIKE IT - BUY IT!"

btw my one and only keygenmusic will be always:

its just giving me chills and calms me down..i find it quite relaxing.
i dont think they recreate the exe..they just patch & save the changes they made.
it gets really interesting when they start to emulate stuff, trick steam and even create new files or manipulate game DLLs...its rarely only the exefile itself which is patched.

they know what they are doing...but i think people confuse "reverse engineering" with "cracking" often.
Take Lena151's series REVERSE ENGINEERING FOR NEWBIES for example...its teaching you very very well how to use Ollydbg - but all you learn there is cracking. it has basicly nothing to do with reverse engineering but with modification/patching.

Good music share! I also love keygen music, here's a chiptunes playlist I put together:
https://soundcloud.com/guntmuffin/sets/chiptunes

The motivation behind the cracking is being the first one to release the crack/keygen, which means you did it the fastest which proves you're better than the other groups. It's the mental challenge

Here's a great history video on the topic:

Keygenning is more 1337 than cracking, reversing their key generation algorithm vs placing a couple jmps ya know

Reverse Engineering scene is going down for many reasons. It's was fun but not now, not anymore. :(

Damn reading that article and hearing that people sell cracked shit? That is egregious.

I would say that 2 things are contributing to the decline in the RE scene:

Life is easy when you don't challenge yourself. In the past, being a pathetic piece of shit was something to be ashamed of. Now it is the norm.

Being a geek is kewl now, all the geeks are getting laid instead of coding :FeelsGoodMan:
